Morehouse moved to 2-0 with their 42-20 defeat of Lane College.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw the lead swapped the lead four times. Lance got the scoring going in big play fashion with Joshua Jeffrey taking it 58- yards to the house. The extra point was missed, leaving the score 6-0 in favor of the dragons.
Morehouse would claim their first lead of the game in the second quarter when quarterback Michael Sims connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass with Amyr Smith. The extra point was converted by Fernando Sdelam, putting the Maroon Tigers up 7-0.
Lane would reclaim the lead at the end of a 3-play, 66-yard drive that ended on a 68-yard touchdown run from Joshua Jeffrey. The Dragons attempted a two-point conversion that was unsuccessful, leaving the score 12-7. Morehouse would strike back with a 7-play, 60 yard drive that reach the end zone with just 35 seconds left in the half off a 12-yard touchdown pass from Sims to Ryan Edwards to put the Maroon Tigers up 14-12 heading into halftime.
With 4:29 remaining in the third quarter, wide receiver Tremell Gooden made an acrobatic catch in the back of the endzone that extended the Morehouse lead to 21-12. The Maroon Tiger defense forced a turnover on Lane’s next possession and Morehouse would score from 28 yards out on a pass from Sims to Santo Dunn off a triple reverse to put MHC up 28-12.
Sims would record his fifth touchdown pass of the game, a 15-yard strike to Edwards, his second TD reception of the game, that made the score 35-12. Less than five minutes later, running back Frank Bailey, Jr. punched it in from 2 yards out. The converted extra point made the score 42-12. A late touchdown from Lane ( a 22-yard touchdown pass) would bring the score to its final mark, 42-20.
Morehouse will host Central State next Saturday in their home opener. It has been dubbed as the BLACKOUT game. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST. Lane will look to get their first when of the season next week when they host Livingstone College. The game will kickoff at 2 p.m. CST.
